St Patricks Festival Killarney hosted a full week of events this year aptly named Ireland Past Present and Future. The festival ran from Saturday 12th to Sunday 20thMarch. St Patricks Day Parade, started at Mission Road at 2pm. Fantastic to see so many well known buildings highlighted in green for our national day.  Our branch was represented on the day by musicians and dancers at Towers Hotel stand.

Celtic Steps The Show performed after the parade at the main viewing stand. The Show returns for 2016, the venue again this year is Killarney Racecourse, currently entering its 5th season, opening Sunday April 3rd.Tickets: now available at Racecourse Box Office, online & tourist offices nationwide info@celticsteps.ie.

History was made in Killarney on St Patrick’s Day, when Michael O’Connor, 103 years of age from Muckross, was one of the Grand Marshals. Michael was born in Glencar in south Kerry in 1913. He left Ireland as a young man, and followed a career as a radio operator during World War II. The former Merchant Navy man, travelled the world, survived the sinking of his ship by a German U-boat as well as the blockade of The Bay of Bengal by the Japanese, where only five of the 30 ships trapped there, including his, managed to escape. His most memorable memory is enjoying a champagne dinner on Christmas Day in Trinidad. He returned home after the war where he met and married his wife Joan, and they had five children. Michael still keeps active today and still drives his car in to town. The parade was spectacular as usual well done to everybody Organisers, Participants, Dignitaries and Volunteers.
