The music of North Kerry â a geographical area characterised by a
regional repertoire and style of instrumental traditional music, is
captured in the understated vitality and sweet rhythmic music of The
Shannon Vale Céilí Band. This ensemble immortalizes a style of
music from a bygone era and reflects flavours of the Tulla, Kilfenora,
Aughrim Slopes and Ballinakill, yet the enduring vigour and elegance
of North Kerry music is their solid foundation.
The original band was formed in Ballyduff in 1960 by Dr. Mick Sweeney. Following the revival of
the Shannon Vale by leader Danny OâMahony in 2009, they have since achieved huge success including winning the coveted title of All-Ireland Senior Céilí Band Champions at Fleadh Cheoil na hÃireann, Cavan in 2011.
The band comprises an impressive line-up of musicians featuring Sheila Garry and Colm Kissane on fiddles, Marianne Browne on flute, Joe Oâ Sullivan on flute and vocals. Mike Collins features on banjo, John Collins provides percussion on drums and Patsy Broderick, formerly of Arcady, features on piano. Critically acclaimed accordionist Danny OâMahony is the driving force behind the band. The combined result is a powerful and dynamic overall sound, enriched by the spectrum of individual styles and a shared appreciation
of the music and song of North Kerry.
