Breanndán Feiriteur RIP
Coiste Chontae Chiarraí Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann wish to extend their sympathy to the family of Breanndán Feiriteur who was laid to rest on November 22nd 2016 in his native Baile an Fheirtéirigh. Breanndán was pre-deceased by his wife Treasa in April 2016. Both Breanndán and Treasa will be remembered as true stalwarts of Comhaltas agus an Ghaeilge.
Born and reared in the Gaeltacht of Corca Dhuibhne, Breanndán was a proud native Irish speaker and took every opportunity to promote the Irish language in all Comhaltas activities. Among many other tasks, he did trojan work in translating the CCÉ Bunreacht into Irish.
Breanndán had a deep interest in sean-nós singing and had a vast knowledge and appreciation of the Irish songs and singing styles of the Gaeltacht areas of the country. Many times, he adjudicated Irish singing competitions at Fleadhanna Cheoil at the highest level.
Breanndán held a number of positions in CCÉ at both county and provincial level. He was Cathaoirleach of Comhairle na Mumhan from 1972 to 1976.This was followed by a term as Munster delegate to Ard Chomhairle from 1978-1980. He was president of Comhairle na Mumhan CCÉ, a position he held from 1998 to 2004. Both Breanndán and Treasa also served as the Kerry delegates to the Munster Council CCÉ for many years.
Bhí ard-mheas ag Breanndán ar gach gné de chultúr dúchasach na hÉireann- ar litríocht, seanachas, stair, ceol, amhránaíocht agus ar an teanga ach go háirithe. Gaeilgeoir go smior a bhí ann. Bhí réimse leathan eolais aige ar gnéithe acadúla na teanga Gaeilge, idir foclóir, gnéithe gramadaí agus foghraíocht.
I measc imeachtaí cultúrtha eile, d’eagraigh Breanndán agus Treasa an comórtas Tráth na gCeist ‘Dúchas’ do dhaltaí bunscoile, na ceisteanna dírithe go hiomlán ar gach gné den saol in Éirinn agus b’ard an caighdeán eolais a bhain leis.
Ba mhúinteoir bunscoile é Breanndán. Chaith sé tréimhsí ag múineadh in Iarthar Luimní agus i mBaile Átha Cliath sular fhill sé thar n-ais go Ciarraí mar phríomh-oide i gCaisléan na Mainge, áit ina raibh radharc aige ar shléibhte Sliabh Mis agus atá suite ar bhéal leithnis Corca Dhuibhne.
Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
Karen Trench Secretary Kerry CCÉ
