Sat Jan 27 at Handed Down fiddle player Matt Cranitch who has a PhD on the subject will ask that question to the audience and with special guest Martin O Connor of Roches Cross one of O Keeffe’s last students try to give us the answers .
Using video and audio interviews of past pupils like Mikey Duggan , Maida Sugrue Sonny Riordan and others to illustrate certain points.
Our guests on the night will include local man Dave Buckley from Coolnagerah now living in Barrow Tralee . Trio Gearoid Keating ,Mairead Corridan and Mike Rice on Banjo ,Concertina and flute respectively.
We have a collection of musicians from the Killarney/ Kilcummin/ Kilgarvan areas who are loyal audience members of Handed Down but will take to the stage for the first time under the tile Margaret B, Billy,John and friends.
Our young musicians are Lauren O Connor on fiddle and Caoimhe Murphy on Concertina. Caoimhe is a granddaughter of the late Dan Murphy of the Failte Bar Abbeyfeale who himself often played at Scartaglin Feile Cheoil.
We also welcome back a great young fiddle player Meabh Ní Chonaill from Kilnamartyra.
Also on the night a presentation of The Dan O Connell Memorial award will be made to the Handed Down organisers in recognition of the work they do. We start earlier than usual at 7.45 due to the comprehensive programme.
All fiddle players under the age of 18 are free admission to this talk
