Handed Down “ Journey into Tradition “ Placing the Button Accordion in the Sliabh Luachra Context presented by Màire O Keeffe 9th December 2017 at 8pm

Sliabh Luachra Music has been shaped by set dancing down through the years and as a result because of its volume and other strengths the Button Accordion became very popular here and produced some great players and styles . Guest presenter Màire O Keeffe will trace that journey ,charting the development of the instrument, melodeon and the Baldoni instruments which Kerry musicians in the USA loved to how C#D and BC players all fitted in to the Sliabh Luachra scene .We always look forward to December and a visit from Màire as her knowledge is unending and we also get to hear her play .Special Guests include box players Eoghan O Sullivan of The Smokey Chimney recordings ,Padraig Moynihan Glenflesk , Haruaki Saito from Japan who has a large repertoire of Johnny O Leary tunes and 11 year old Michael Healy who is learning his trade sitting in sessions with the great Jimmy Doyle
Other guests include local players Con Moynihan and Denis O Connor  , Sliabh Luachra singer Christy Cronin and young musicians Shane Curtin Rockchapel and Rachel O Connor who is a grand daughter of Maurice O Keeffe of Kiskeam RIPWe are also going to hold a raffle for a unique prize of a signed poster of the 25th Patrick O Keeffe Festival featuring many of the stars who played in the concert on the Sun Night . This is donated to us to raise funds for World Fiddle Day on May 19 2018 .  Please support Handed Down as we depend on its revenue to raise funds for the festival . We have brought top class music and stories to Scartaglin and have always kept admission prices down .
